    Live Calci Worm FAQs

What is the recommended feeding quantity for chickens? We recommend a daily serving of approximately 10g of live larvae per bird. This provides a significant protein and calcium boost while encouraging natural foraging behaviors. While Calci Worms are a "superfood," they should be offered alongside a balanced, high-quality poultry feed to ensure a complete diet.

Do I need to feed or "gut load" the live larvae? Answer: No! One of the biggest benefits of Calci Worms is that they arrive nutritionally complete. They have already stored all the protein and calcium they need to be a "superfood" for your pets. You can feed them directly to your reptiles, birds, or poultry the moment they arrive.

How do I store Live Calci Worms and how long do they last? Unlike mealworms, Live Calci Worms (Black Soldier Fly Larvae) should not be kept in the fridge. They stay at their nutritional peak for 2–3 weeks when stored at room temperature 10°C - 18°C. Keep them in the tub provided with the lid closed; they require very little oxygen and are extremely low-maintenance.

Why have some of the larvae turned black? This is normal. As live Calci Worms move into the later parts of their life cycle they stop eating, turn dark and stop moving. They are still nutritious and healthy. In fact, as the live Calci Worms darken, the levels of Chitin in their bodies increase which has a number of health benefits for birds, especially for gut health and immunity.

What happens if the larvae turn into flies? If your Live Calci Worms have been around for around 2 weeks, and have been warm enough, they may emerge as an adult fly. This is not an issue. The fly will not eat anything and cannot spread any diseases. They are non-invasive and will just fly away.

What if my chickens are hesitant to eat them? Some chickens may be suspicious of new food at first. We find that in almost all cases, once one tries one the rest will follow suit and they will quickly identify them as a top tier treat. From then on they will go crazy for them. Scatter Live Calci Worms on the ground for a few days in a row and you will see how quickly they start loving them.
