The larvae are not moving
Black Soldier Fly larvae are native to the tropics and so are used to much warmer temperatures than in the UK. When they get cold they will stop moving but they will still be alive and can be revived by warming them up.
The larvae have gone black
This is normal. As live Calci Worms move into the later parts of their life cycle they stop eating, turn dark and stop moving. They are still nutritious and healthy. In fact, as the live Calci Worms darken, the levels of Chitin in their bodies increase which has a number of health benefits for birds, especially for gut health and immunity.

Some chickens may be suspicious of new food at first. We find that in almost all cases, once they have tried a few Calci Worms they quickly identify them as a top tier treat and will go crazy for them from then on. Scatter the live Calci Worms on the ground for a few days in a row and you will see how quickly they start loving them.
What if the larvae become flies?
If your live Calci Worms have been around for around 2 weeks, and have been warm enough, they may emerge as an adult fly. This is not an issue. The fly will not eat anything and cannot spread amy diseases. They are non-invasive and will just fly away.
